The personal electronic address and credit card information of Thomas Joyce, former Chief Executive Officer of Knight Capital, was in a database of Stratfor’s clients that was hacked by Anonymous on December 25, 2011, it was revealed in the book Knightmare on Wall Street, Edgar Perez’s business thriller about the dramatic hours following Knight Capital’s trading error of August 1, 2012.

Stratfor, also referred as Strategic Forecasting, is a private intelligence agency based in Austin, Texas, that published a daily intelligence briefing since its inception in 1996; Barron’s once referred to it as “the Shadow CIA”.  Anonymous is the loosely associated network of hacktivists.

The attack began with the release of Stratfor’s client list posted online, followed by the release of accounts in batches believed to belong to its customers. The release announced included emails, passwords, home/office addresses and credit card information (full 16-digit number, expiry date and CVV number). The list of the leaked accounts was made available online for users to check if they were affected.
